Sealink UK Ltd 3.1. Sealink UK Ltd runs shipping services and owns and operates ports.The company is owned by the British Railways Board (BRB). Most Continentalservices are operated in partnership with the French Societe Nationale desChemins de Per Francais (SNCF), the Belgian Regie des Transports Maritimes(RTM) or the Dutch Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland (SMZ). The partnershave used the 'Sealink' trade name since 1969 as has Sealink UK on all itsroutes. In this chapter 'Sealink' refers to all the partners collectively and'Sealink UK' only to the British company and its predecessors. 3.2. The 25 ferry routes operated by Sealink UK and its partners and theports and port facilities owned by Sealink UK are shown at Figure 3.1.3.3. Sealink UK has two ferry subsidiaries: Manx Line Ltd (85 per centowned) which operates from Heysham to Douglas, and a French company,Societe Anonyme de Navigation Angleterre-Lorraine-Alsace (wholly-owned),which operates one vessel on the Dover-Dunkirk train ferry service.  3
.4. For many years Sealink UK's business was limited almost entirely to
the carriage by sea of passengers and freight arriving at ports by rail. Althoughsome accompanied vehicles were carried on Continental routes they wereloaded and discharged by crane until ro/ro facilities were provided in the1950s. Over the last 20 years or so the acccompanied car and commercial roadvehicle traffic carried by the company has increased greatly and now it providesthe major part of Sealink UK's revenue.

From the middle of the 19th century the railway companies diversifiedinto ports and shipping in order to provide links between the railway systemsin Britain, Continental Europe and Ireland. Boat trains and ships werescheduled to provide good connections and convenient port interchanges wereprovided. 3.6. With the nationalisation of transport in 1948 the shipping services andports became part of the individual railway regions until 1969 when they werebrought together under the management of the Shipping and InternationalServices Division of British Railways. In 1979 the Shipping and InternationalServices Division was reconstituted as a wholly-owned subsidiary company ofBRB under the name of Sealink UK.
